Based on a wager, two young men devise a plan to test the fidelity of their girlfriends. What follows is a precarious game of seduction and power, in which the four lovers fall into a dizzying world of shifting reality, where the truth becomes increasingly unstable.
Director Netia Jones, in her debut on the main stage of the Royal Opera House, reimagines Mozart's comedy of manners with a sharp, contemporary lens, where the romantic intrigues of the 18th century meet a deeply satirical, technologically advanced deception. The roles of the lovers are played by an exciting cast of young singers: Louise Alder, Simone McIntosh, Mingjie Lei, and Huw Montague Rendall, joined by Gerald Finley as the manipulative mastermind Don Alfonso and Emily Pogorelc as Despina. Conducting will be Thomas Hengelbrock, who will bring out the magnificent melodies that underscore the provocative and modern themes at the very heart of this opera.
