About this event
CrossOver Collective represents one of the most distinctive faces of the contemporary Czech jazz scene. In this project, pianist and composer Marek Novotný connects jazz improvisation with chamber classical music and inspiration from Czech and world folklore. The result is original compositions that are close to concert songs – melodically rich, thoughtfully constructed, and at the same time open to spontaneous musical dialogue. The ensemble uses an unconventional combination of string instruments, piano, double bass, drums, and vocals. The atmosphere of the concert is focused rather than showy, building on detail, color, and the musicians' mutual listening. The project brings a unique fusion of classical and jazz aesthetics to the Czech scene – progressive, but not experimental; simply music that has soul, momentum, and its own language.
Marek Novotný studied jazz composition in the United States, has also worked in Norway, and has collaborated with a number of leading Czech and foreign musicians. His work moves between jazz and classical music and also draws inspiration from Czech and world folk music. In addition to his own jazz projects, he composes for a diverse range of instrumental ensembles – from chamber groups to big bands to orchestras.
