Poets of Silence 2026: Beata Hlavenková & Monodie 2.0

Beata Hlavenková, a Czech composer, pianist, and singer, combines the reinterpretation of an ancient musical form with intimate poetry and contemporary musical elements on her new album.

The record is the result of a collaboration between several distinctive artists and is formally based on a musical style that emerged in Italy around 1600, which is then placed into a contemporary context.

The initial inspiration for this project came from the album L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S by Nicholas Lens and Nick Cave. L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S was a response to loneliness, isolation, and uncertainty during the pandemic, and to a disturbing world of violence and aggression. Martin Prokeš (Lípa Musica) approached Beata Hlavenková to study this work. Soon, the idea was born to create a completely new, unique music project by Beata, known for her courage to experiment, her unmistakable signature style, and her ability to move beyond genre boundaries while always remaining true to herself.

And so Monodie 2.0 was born, a modern reinterpretation of an ancient form set within the context of contemporary music and lyrics. Here, Hlavenková combines unexpected instrumentation: from bass clarinet and kora to balalaika and a string quartet, creating a cohesive and sonically daring mosaic full of counterpoint, delicate layers, and rhythmic surprises. In addition to Beata Hlavenková, the recording features singer Martin Prokeš, clarinetist and singer Vojtěch Nýdl, Kirill Yakovlev on plucked instruments, and trumpeter Oskar Török. The Pavel Bořkovec Quartet also has its place in the cycle, with its violist Matěj Kroupa responsible for the musical arrangements. The dramaturgy of the poetry block was handled by the poet JQR, Natálie Deáková, and Beata Hlavenková.

Her main asset is courage – the courage to experiment and to seek out unconventional harmonies and arrangements. Genre freedom, based on a deep awareness of jazz, modern classical music, pop, and songwriting, intertwines in all her projects with a clearly recognizable, focused, and sensitive interpretation.
