Performance by the Kleines Salontheater Dresden
The home or paper theater was a popular form of entertainment in the bourgeois salons of the Biedermeier period in the first half of the 19th century. Many operas and dramas that could not be performed in public due to censorship found an enthusiastic audience here. It was not until the end of the century that it found its way into children's rooms and the world of fairy tales.
The Kleines Salontheater Dresden, reconstructed from an original dating back to around 1890, takes up this tradition. The architectural model is the peep-show stage with its wings and backdrops, which creates three-dimensional illusionary spaces with an astonishing depth effect. And all this within a spatial dimension of 50 cm in width, depth, and height. All in all, this historical gem with its handmade, original performance is an immensely imaginative form of theater that, in our age of TV and computers, reawakens a piece of lost childhood in its naive worldview.
Everyone surely knows the story of Three Wishes for Cinderella.
The poor, downtrodden girl frees herself with courage and wit from an almost hopeless situation in the house of her wicked stepmother and eventually wins her prince. The crafty stepmother, along with her snobbish and lazy daughter Dorchen, leave empty-handed and receive their well-deserved punishment on top of that. Although the magic of the hazelnuts and the wisdom of Rosalie the owl provide significant help, Cinderella must take her heart in her hands to find her happiness. Then there is a happy ending, too.
The fairy tale by Bozena Nemcova plays imaginatively with motifs from the ancient, Europe-wide widespread fairy tale of Cinderella. Our table theater's version picks up the author's story and links it with its origins to create a magical experience for young and old. The special performance style refuses a simple reenactment of the film template, yet possesses a special charm due to its wit, surprising variety of action, and proximity to the audience.
