Zittwerke was a secret Nazi enterprise of the Junkers Flugzeugwerke company from Dessau. New types of turbine engines for the Messerschmitt Me 262 – the Wehrmacht's jet-powered fighter aircraft – were manufactured there. In response to the bombing of central Germany, production was moved to the Zittau area in 1943/44. Many factories in the area of today's Tri-Border Area were seized for this purpose. The core of the production complex became the barracks in Kleinschönau (today's Sieniawka), which were expanded for this purpose. Thousands of prisoners had to work here in inhumane conditions. Production began at the end of 1944.
