Mandaujazz Festival Opening: CrossOver Collective

The CrossOver Collective is one of the most distinctive projects in the current Czech jazz scene. Pianist and composer Marek Novotný combines jazz improvisation with chamber classical music, polyphonic singing, and influences from Czech and international folklore. The result is artful original compositions. They are melodically rich, carefully structured, and at the same time open to spontaneous musical dialogues.

The ensemble works with an unusual combination of string instruments, piano, double bass, drums, and vocals. The atmosphere of the concert is focused rather than showy and thrives on fine details, tonal colors, and the attentive interplay of the musicians. The project brings a special connection of classical and jazz musical aesthetics to the stage. Progressive, but not experimental. Music with soul, energy, and a language all its own.

Marek Novotný studied jazz composition in the USA, also worked in Norway, and has collaborated with numerous renowned Czech and international musicians. His music moves between jazz and classical music while simultaneously drawing from Czech and international folk music. In addition to his own jazz projects, he composes for a wide variety of ensembles, from chamber ensembles and big bands to orchestras.
