Armin Pietsch invites you to a tour of the Jewish cemetery in the city of Zittau on Tuesday, November 10th, at 2 PM.
The cemetery, which covers an area of 1020 m², is located at Görlitzer Straße 67. There are over 60 gravestones present. Jews settled in the city in the 19th century and founded a community. This was officially recognized in 1885. The Jewish cemetery in Zittau was established in 1887, and the oldest known gravestone inscription dates from 1888. The cemetery was surrounded by a wooden fence. During the National Socialist era, it was desecrated and blown up during the November pogrom in 1938. In 1948, a memorial stone was erected at the Jewish cemetery to commemorate the 40 murdered Jewish citizens from the cities of Zittau and Löbau.
