A comic opera inspired by a true story from the Podještědí region.

Along with The Bartered Bride, Bedřich Smetana's The Kiss is among his most performed operas. The composer wrote the work while he was already deaf, enduring the most dramatic moments of his life. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, he succeeded in imprinting the work with the poetics of the Czech countryside, woven through with captivating melodies. This lyrical portrait of a young village couple, Vendulka and Lukáš, with a straightforward plot, reveals what happens when two people quarrel over a kiss. The libretto was created by Eliška Krásnohorská based on a short story by Karolina Světlá, who wrote it according to a true story from a small village in the Podještědí region.
