International Academic Conference: Upper Lusatia under the Habsburgs 1526–1635. Politics – Economy – Confession
About this event
On October 22, 1526, Ferdinand of Habsburg, the younger brother of Emperor Charles V, was elected King of Bohemia, before being crowned five months later on February 24, 1527. With this, he also assumed rule over the Bohemian crown lands, including Upper Lusatia.
Habsburg rule over Upper Lusatia would last for more than a hundred years, until King Ferdinand II enfeoffed the Saxon Elector John George I with Upper Lusatia in 1635, in the midst of the Thirty Years' War. Over these hundred-plus years, Habsburg rule left manifold traces in the political history of Upper Lusatia, as well as in its economic, military, cultural, artistic, and church history.
The task of this conference is to trace these footprints from various perspectives and to examine the interconnections with Bohemia and Hungary.
International scholars will present 18 lectures over 2 days.
The venue is the town hall of the city of Zittau, Markt 1, 02763 Zittau
Admission to the conference is free. Please register at https://eveeno.com/180714297 or via the Städtische Museen Zittau.
