About this event

Reading from the novel

Lorenzo, Caspar and Miss Detroit: Three friends – all somewhere between mid-life and world-weariness – set off on a journey through the heart of Central Europe. In the trunk: the bones of a Nazi criminal, which they have stolen from a Berlin cemetery to beat the plundering Reichsbürger to them. What begins as an absurd mission becomes a road trip across cemeteries and into the past. While Lorenzo tries to write a poem about the dead European poets in the back seat, Miss Detroit dreams of becoming a cemetery botanist. And Caspar remembers his great-uncle, who died tragically as a child in the war and has been haunting the family history ever since. With every kilometer driven, the three move closer to one another and yearn for an answer to the question that grows louder with every grave: What do the dead tell us if we listen to them?

A fast-paced novel full of laconic humor: Jaroslav Rudiš embarks on a rapid odyssey along the borders of Europe's center and what holds us together.
