A recital by the guitarist, singer, director, and songwriter
Karel Plíhal is a Czech guitarist, singer, arranger, lyricist, and music director. He was born on August 23, 1958, in the very heart of the flat Haná region, in the town of Přerov. He studied at the Secondary Industrial School of Mechanical Engineering in nearby Olomouc, after which he became a designer and stoker at the Olomouc Theatre. Although he had and has no formal musical education, he soon switched from a career as a stoker to that of a lyricist and singer-songwriter, which caused him no difficulties—he had been playing the guitar since he was 15.
His first musical destinations were mainly Olomouc underground country-swing bands such as Hučka, Falešní hráči, and Plíharmonyje. His first solo performance dates back to the still-red-tinted year of 1983. Between 1985 and 1993, he was accompanied at his concerts and performances by Emil Pospíšil, and subsequently, between 1995 and 1999, by Petr Freund.
He has composed music for several productions at the Moravian Theatre in Olomouc—e.g., Zlatovláska, Manon Lescaut, The Winter's Tale, The Passion, The Servant of Two Masters, The Love of Don Perlimplín and Belisa in the Garden, and Giroflé-Giroflá.
Among other things, he has set many of Kainar's poems to music and directed many albums by Jaromír Nohavica, Petr Fiala, Bokomara, and the Eben Brothers. In 2006, he published a collection of his poems titled Jako cool v plotě, featuring illustrations by Miroslav Barták. He is now planning to release the album Vzduchoprázdniny.
His greatest "hits" include, in particular, the albums Nebe počká (2004), the music for the film Year of the Devil (2002), Kluziště (2000), and the older Imaginární hospoda (1986).
Karel Plíhal is now a four-time winner of the Porta music competition festival.
