Lausitz Festival: Symphony of 100 Metronomes

About this event

Strictly speaking, the metronome is an aid for musical practice: its beat dictates and controls the tempo of the performance. In György Ligeti's 1962 composition »Poème Symphonique«, one of the most extraordinary pieces of music of all time, the metronome itself becomes the instrument, indeed the performer: wound to identical tension and set to different tempi, 100 metronomes are started simultaneously, ticking through and with one another, gradually stopping until only one last metronome remains—and falls silent.

This purely percussive, mechanical music forms a soundscape that is constantly changing. It unfolds a humorous, but also thoroughly hypnotic effect, inviting reflection on transformation processes of all kinds.

The Lausitz Festival is presenting Ligeti's classic at three different locations in the region, inviting the respective audiences in very different settings to experience this unique and intense musical-holistic performance for a duration of a good fifteen minutes.

A concert as part of the opening of the anniversary exhibition »super_grau«. The exhibition opens on August 29 at 7:00 PM.

Admission is free.
