An idyllic Greek island, a girl about to be married, a quirky mother, three potential fathers, and the immortal ABBA. How does it rhyme? Perfectly. The theatrical musical show Mamma Mia!, containing all the ingredients mentioned, has been seen by over 30 million people in eight different language versions. Their numbers are now set to grow geometrically, as the creators of the original musical decided to adapt "their child" into a feature film. And to give Mamma Mia! a touch of the extraordinary on the silver screen, they cast Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan in the lead roles... Young Sophie lives with her slightly crazy mother Donna on the small Greek island of Kalokairi, where they run a slightly fading family hotel. Neither of them is easy to live with because Sophie is about to get married. While Donna worries about purely practical concerns, Sophie has only one problem – who will walk her down the aisle. Her mother's diary, which she found, reveals that Donna was intimate with three different boys at the time of Sophie's conception. The resourceful girl, who inherited her mother's eccentricity, doesn't hesitate and invites all three to the wedding. And they (the free-spirited businessman Sam, the uptight banker Harry, and the quirky adventurer Bill) arrive. There are twenty-four hours left until the ceremony. During that time, the bride will have to find the right one. And since Donna had no idea about the arrival of these three reminders of her youth's sins, it will be lively on Kalokairi even without the wedding... The story, as crystal clear as the water in any good Greek bay, is driven forward by ABBA songs irresistibly sung by the film's stars. When Donna describes her bad financial situation, "Money, Money, Money" plays; the moment she encounters her former lovers, "Mamma Mia!" starts, and so it goes from beginning to end, no ABBA hit is left unused... The idea for a musical standing and falling with the songs of the group ABBA was born in the mind of producer Judy Craymer. It took her over ten years to get permission to use them – the condition was a musical that would have nothing to do with the group, "only" utilizing their songs. Obtaining permission to shoot a feature film was significantly easier, especially when the men from ABBA, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, became its co-producers. Another co-producer, the famous actor Tom Hanks, summarizes the reasons why the film should be a success: "Just like me, after ten minutes, you will want to stand up and start singing. It's very contagious."
