Modest in instrumentation, monumental in impact. Dvořák's Mass in D Major inspires, amazes, and moves.
For several years now, Lípa Musica has been extending its reach into the Bohemian Paradise region. This time, the organizers were captivated by the picturesque village of Bzí, high above the Jizera river, just a stone's throw from Železný Brod. They have placed Dvořák's magnificent work—the Mass in D Major (Lužanská mše)—in a church that is usually only open for short periods, performed by Ensemble Inégal.
The Mass in D Major was created at the initiative of architect and arts patron Josef Hlávka, who asked his friend Antonín Dvořák to compose a new mass for the consecration of the chapel at his estate in Lužany. In addition to the organ and choir, the chapel's choir loft could only accommodate a cello and a double bass. Despite this unusual and modest instrumentation, the Mass in D Major is a truly monumental work. It acknowledges and underscores Dvořák's piety just as powerfully as his Requiem or Stabat Mater.
