Giacomo Puccini One of the most famous works in the world's operatic repertoire captures the love story of the dazzling singer Floria Tosca and the painter Mario Cavaradossi, which might have unfolded as a dull love story with a happy ending, were it not set during unstable times of war. Famous Rome is being occupied by the enemy troops of the Kingdom of Naples, and established order is radically transformed under the crushing power of the police chief Scarpia and his cronies. Where are the boundaries of humanity, love, and conscience, and how can one live honorably and in love where it is impossible to do so? Is there perhaps another possibility hidden on the horizon? The magnificent Tosca, which Puccini composed to a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa based on the play of the same name by Victorien Sardou, premiered at the turn of the new millennium, on January 14, 1900, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. It returns to the Liberec stage after more than 20 years.
