To the surprise of experts, a veritable landscape of Lenten veils has been discovered in Poland in recent years. A total of 17 examples are currently known. These are located in the voivodeships of Małopolska/Lesser Poland (12), Podkarpackie/Subcarpathian (2), and Śląskie/Silesia (4). The oldest veil celebrated its 350th anniversary this year. It is an ARMA CHRISTI veil that covers the altar in the days before Easter in the magnificent wooden church dedicated to St. John the Baptist in Orawka. The small town is located in the Beskids between Kraków and Zakopane. To mark this occasion, Dr. Volker Dudeck, together with his Polish colleague Lucyna Borczuch, wrote a publication titled Znaki Męki. Zaslony wielkopostne typu arma Christi (German: Symbols of the Passion. Lenten veils of the ARMA CHRISTI type). Dr. Dudeck was invited to the anniversary celebration on March 28, 2026, in Orawka, where the brochure was presented to the public. He took this opportunity to visit further Lenten veils in the region together with Lucyna Borczuch.
In a lecture on Wednesday, August 12, at 6 PM at the Museum Church of the Holy Cross – Great Zittau Lenten Veil, he will describe his travel impressions and present the Polish veils.
