Lecture by Hans Klecker: "From Kließlroaffer to Abernmauke and Feuerriepl - Upper Lusatian Words from 2015 to 2026"

Since 2008, the Ilse-Bähnert-Stiftung has been choosing the Saxon Word of the Year in order to save dialectal words from extinction.
The first Upper Lusatian word was determined in 2015 by Schnatl-Koarln. At the request of the Oberlausitzische Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften, Hans Klecker took over determining the Upper Lusatian Word of the Year starting in 2020. Since then, he has involved the dialect and traditional costume enthusiasts of the Lusatia-Verband e.V. in the selection process. In the last three years, more than one thousand votes were cast each time. For example, in 2025, the word Pumplruse (peony) won with 256 votes.
This event is a linguistic lecture about the origin, meaning, and distribution of the annual winning words. Humorous text examples in Upper Lusatian poems, idioms, and dialect songs illustrate these words. Plenty of laughter is encouraged.
Furthermore, Hans Klecker will present his latest book, “Die Oberlausitzer Wörter des Jahres ab 2015” (Upper Lusatian Words of the Year from 2015 onwards).

Hans Klecker (born 1948), native to Obercunnersdorf, is the quintessential Upper Lusatian dialect poet, researcher, entertainer, and expert on local customs.
He has been active for the Upper Lusatia region for over 50 years and has published countless works on the subject.
