About this event
Forbidden love in the most iconic musical of all time.
Leonard Bernstein: Without exaggeration, the most famous musical of all time and one of the high points of the genre. West Side Story first appeared in New York on September 26, 1957, on the Broadway stage. It immediately became a hit and a milestone in musical productions. This is largely due to the exceptionally inventive music of the brilliant composer Leonard Bernstein, as well as the demanding dance numbers, which, together with the music, created a highly emotional means of expression. In this work, the choreography of the dance scenes became an integral part of the music and plot line, binding them together compactly. The plot is inspired by Shakespeare's tragic story of Romeo and Juliet, which the creators set in the West Side of New York in the 1950s. Two street gangs compete for control of this territory – the local "Jets" and the Puerto Rican immigrants, the "Sharks". Hatred, rivalry, and constant conflict prevail between the two gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. Nevertheless, Tony, a young American, and Maria, from Puerto Rico, fall in love and dream of a life together. However, the story heads toward an inevitable tragic end. All three ensembles of DFXŠ are involved in this legendary musical, which is full of famous hits. The iconic singing, acting, and dance numbers will enchant you. The moving message about the power of love and the fragility of human life has fascinated audiences for decades, and it rightfully belongs on the pedestal of the musical genre.
