About this event

A dance adaptation of the famous comedy.

William Shakespeare, Dmitri Shostakovich, Marika Mikanová “When the scythe hits the stone, sparks fly to the clouds.” On the stage of the Šalda Theatre, we will bring to life the famous 1594 play by William Shakespeare – The Taming of the Shrew. In our interpretation, this comedy about the headstrong Katherina and the Veronese nobleman Petruchio transcends the temporal and social framework of the 16th century, remaining vibrant and relatable to audiences of all ages even today. The attractive theme of the complicated relationship between men and women continues to draw audiences and remains a compelling subject for theatrical adaptation even after four hundred years. The story of how the scythe hit the stone leads us, with exaggeration and humor, on a perilous and difficult journey seeking understanding between fire and water, Yin and Yang, Mars and Venus… In the choreography by ballet director Marika Mikanová and accompanied by the energetic music of Dmitri Shostakovich, the ballet ensemble will bring you an unforgettable experience full of emotion and humor, letting you delve into the depths of the human heart. What do you think? Will our Petruchio manage to tame the shrew Katherina and turn her into a humble and representative wife? The Liberec ballet last performed this title in 1961, choreographed by Věra Untermüllerová.
