Hillersche Villa

The house and its residents
The Hillersche Villa was built between 1889–1891 based on a design by the Zittau architect W. R. Poppe. It served as the family home of the industrialist Gustav Hiller and his family. Hiller came from Großschönau and founded the Phänomenwerke Zittau company, which produced machines for manufacturing curtain cords, bicycles, the Phänomobil motorcycles, and trucks of the Robur brand.
During the Nazi era, the villa was linked to the tragic fate of Berta Hiller, who was subjected to persecution as a Jew. In 1942, she died in her villa, which had become a place of forced isolation and suffering during her final years.
After the Second World War, the Phänomenwerke company was expropriated and converted into the state-owned enterprise VEB Roburwerke in the GDR. After 1989, the villa was returned to the possession of the Hiller family. Gustav and Berta Hiller's granddaughters, Anne Frommann and Claudia Siede-Hiller, gifted it to the Multikulturelles Zentrum e. V. in 1993, laying the foundation for its current use as a cultural center.

The Hillersche Villa is a socio-cultural center in the tri-border region of Germany–Czech Republic–Poland with locations in Zittau and Großhennersdorf as well as projects in Görlitz, Dresden, and Leipzig.
It offers space for encounters, cultural and creative activities, education, networking, and support in various life situations. The organization focuses on cultural, educational, and social work across national and generational borders. It emerged after 1989 from initiatives of the Multikulturelles Zentrum in Zittau and the meeting center in Großhennersdorf, which were merged in 2010.
The bar Jolesch is located on the ground floor of the villa. Concerts, readings, karaoke nights, game nights, and open meetings take place here – the program offers something for everyone. In addition to the stylish bar, there is also a pool table in the conservatory that invites you to linger.
