About this venue

Lake Olbersdorf (Olbersdorfer See, known by locals simply as O-See) is the vibrant heart of sport and recreation in the Zittau region, the result of a highly-successful regeneration project at a former opencast lignite mine.

Today, the lakeside is home to an excellent campsite, a hotel, a restaurant with a traditional beer garden, beachside snack bars, and a relaxed lounge bar that serves up scenic views over the water. Swimmers enjoy the crystal-clear waters that reach depths of up to 40 metres, choosing between the main sandy beach with all visitor services or quieter, more natural spots along the southern shore.

A well-maintained, flat path (Rundweg) of approximately five kilometres in length loops around the lake, making it ideal for running or peaceful walks with a pram. For bike and adrenaline enthusiasts, a smooth tarmac pumptrack opened on the northern shore in 2024, providing a safe, fun challenge for children, experienced BMX riders, and scooter riders.

The undisputed highlight of the season is the world-famous O-SEE Challenge, held every year in August. This prestigious cross-triathlon—combining swimming in the lake, a demanding mountain bike course, and a trail run—attracts hundreds of elite athletes and thousands of spectators, turning the lake into one of the most energetic sporting destinations in the entire Saxon border region.
