Má vlast (My Country) by composer Bedřich Smetana, an iconic musical cycle inspired by Czech history, legends, and landscapes, ranks among the deepest and most demanding works of the Czech musical heritage.
Smetana's work will be performed in a brilliant rendition by the music ensemble PhilHarmonia Octet Prague and guests, led by the leading Czech oboist Vilém Veverka. This chamber arrangement, technically very demanding, emphasizes interplay, interpretative precision, and the maximum expressive concentration of the individual players.
The author of the historically first complete contemporary arrangement of Má vlast from 2024 is the Turnov composer Martin Hybler, who has collaborated with the library for a long time. This concert thus serves as a symbolic gift for the composer's upcoming milestone birthday.
The Turnov Library on Skálova Street does not have a large concert hall, so the event will take place in the Turnov Sokol house – a historic building from 1898, which has hosted significant concerts in the past, including those with national themes. The space, with its distinct genius loci, will offer an ideal and dignified alternative for this exceptional evening inspired by Czech tradition.
