ExhibitionExhibition

Erich Fuchs. Ethnographer of the Karkonosze Mountains.

About this event

The Gerhart Hauptmann House Municipal Museum in Jelenia Góra cordially invites you to an exhibition dedicated to Erich Fuchs (1890-1983), titled Erich Fuchs. Ethnographer of the Karkonosze Mountains.

The exhibition can be viewed until October 25, 2026.

On display, we present nearly 100 graphics, watercolors, and drawings, as well as unique photographs and the artist's personal items.

The subjects of Fuchs' works were the inhabitants of the Sudetes – weavers, glassmakers, craftsmen, and housewives. He captured their daily work, the interiors of their homes and workshops, creating an extraordinary record of a world that passed away irrevocably after 1945. Thanks to his work, the Karkonosze Mountains are today among the best ethnographically documented mountain regions in Europe.

The exhibition was created based on materials provided by the artist's heirs. Alongside works from the collections of the Stiftung Kulturwerk Schlesien and private collections, we will also present graphics purchased by the Gerhart Hauptmann House Municipal Museum thanks to funding from the 'Expansion of Museum Collections' program of the National Institute of Museums.

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive, bilingual publication dedicated to the life and work of Erich Fuchs, containing reproductions of over 200 works and his detailed biography.

The 'Erich Fuchs's Karkonosze' project is co-financed by the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation, and the partner for its implementation is the Stiftung Kulturwerk Schlesien from Würzburg.
