"Gerhart Hauptmann House" City Museum in Jelenia Góra
Muzeum Miejskie "Dom Gerharta Hauptmanna" w Jeleniej Górze
About this venue
Step into the former home of Nobel Prize-winning writer Gerhart Hauptmann (1862–1946) at the "Gerhart Hauptmann House" City Museum in Jelenia Góra-Jagniątków. The villa, Luční kámen (architect Hans Grisebach, 1901), is an architectural gem in its own right, urrounded by the picturesque landscape of the Karkonosze/Krkonoše Mountains.
Inside, carefully furnished interiors and a rich collection of exhibits bring the writer’s life and times vividly to life. You'll find book editions, photographs, Hauptmann’s personal belongings, and works of art, including a polychrome decoration from 1922 in the Paradise Hall.
The museum also hosts exhibitions, talks, literary workshops, and theatre activities, all aimed at sharing the culture of the Karkonosze region. For anyone who loves literature or regional history, a visit is an extraordinary journey back in time, set in an authentic interior from the early 20th century. It's also a tribute to Hauptmann and to the other creators who were closely tied to the Karkonosze, and who found inspiration for their work in its beauty.
Opening hours
From May 1st to September 30th, the museum is open longer, until 17:00.
