Castles around Liberec

06. 08. – 14. 12. 2026 · ContinuousLiberecCZ

About this event

The core of the exhibition consists of 1:72 scale 3D reconstruction models of local castles, created based on precise technical measurements of preserved architectural fragments and the surrounding terrain. The models present the earliest forms of the Grabštejn, Hamrštejn, Frýdlant, Návarov, Jezdec, and Roimund castles.

The goal of the exhibition is to show the connections and contexts of local castles. Building on the historical context in a broader sense, it includes architectural, military, heraldic, and religious aspects, always to the extent of our current knowledge. At the same time, we will explore geological, geographical, social, and even political contexts. Because a castle is not just a building in the landscape; a castle is also a strategic stronghold, an administrative center, a residence and refuge, and could even have been the seat of a religious community.

Each castle has its own unique life. It was founded in some way, developed in some way, and ended in some way. Sometimes in ruins, sometimes transformed into another object, sometimes vanished entirely even from memory to such an extent that we do not know what it was actually called. This context is also considered in the exhibition through contrasts between the ideal reconstructions of the models and the documented current situation. The exhibition is realized in cooperation with the Curia Vítkov center, which will provide functional, full-scale replicas of medieval war machines and offer a program for accompanying activities, especially workshops focused on medieval crafts and daily life in castles. A representative publication is being prepared for the exhibition.
