How to Survive Health: Nutrition, Sport, and Diabetes: Performance vs. Diagnosis

20. 08. 2026 · 17:00TurnovCZ

About this event

A talk and discussion on how to keep going when diabetes enters your life.

Diabetes is more than just a number on a glucometer. It is constant management of food, movement, and, above all, one's own mind. How do you cope with a diagnosis that is invisible, yet affects every minute of the day? Is it possible to combine top-level sport with a chronic illness without destroying yourself?

Come to an open dialogue at the summer cinema bar, where we will break down myths and look for balance between ambition and the limits of your own body. The evening is intended not only for diabetics, but especially for parents of children with diabetes, young people starting their journey with this diagnosis, and anyone interested in a modern approach to an active life despite limitations.

Guests:
Tereza Jandová (FOKUS Turnov)
A former national biathlete who had to learn that top-level sport with Type 1 diabetes looks completely different than she planned. She will share her powerful story about performance pressure, the mental acceptance of the illness, and how she helps others today.

Jan Hrušovský (Diabetes Podcast / CNN Prima News)
A journalist and creator of the popular Diabetes Podcast, who has long been dedicated to awareness and connecting the diabetes community in the Czech Republic. He will bring perspective, experience from dozens of interviews with experts, and practical tips on how not to get lost in the support system.

What will we discuss together?
Sport and food: How to set up a regimen so that your body functions and you enjoy movement.
Mentality and acceptance: The journey from denial to a "new normal" and how to prevent burnout.
Diagnosis as a new path: Can a limitation paradoxically be an impulse for better self-awareness?
Service for you: Where to turn? We will introduce useful projects like Diapozitiv and other communities that have your back.

The "How to Survive Health" lecture series is dramaturgically and production-wise supported by the organization FOKUS Turnov, z. s., a non-governmental non-profit organization that has been supporting people with mental illness and mental disabilities for more than thirty years on their path to recovery and a full life in the community. In addition to providing social services, it has long been dedicated to awareness and destigmatization of mental health. By participating in this lecture series, FOKUS wants to open topics that the public is often reluctant to discuss, contribute to greater understanding and the breaking down of prejudices, and strengthen open discussion about mental health in society. The subtitle of the series is therefore the motto: A series of lectures on illness, handicap, addiction, and living with them.
