Did you know that the largest manufacturer of glass beads in the world comes from the Crystal Valley? It is the company PRECIOSA ORNELA with plants in Desná and Zásada. Its beads are known by people on all continents, from fashion designers in world metropolises to indigenous tribes in Africa or America.
Beads may be small, but they hold great significance. They are not just decorations. They can express identity, social status, serve as a symbol, a protective amulet, or even a medium of exchange. Thanks to their diversity, they allow for the creation of unique objects and communicate stories and emotions without words.
In the north of Bohemia, bead production developed in the 18th century, when glassmakers from the Jizera Mountains began processing glass tubes inspired by Venetian Murano. However, Czech beads soon stood out for their quality and variety. From the mid-19th century, thanks to traders from the Jablonec region, they were exported to the whole world.
The exhibition A Bead for the Whole World presents how this small glass ornament is used by people thousands of kilometers away from its place of origin. You will see objects created by different cultures, reflecting the skill, tradition, and unique taste of their creators. The bead thus becomes a true bridge between people, cultures, and stories from all over the world.
