About this venue

The Großschweidnitz Memorial (Gedenkstätte Großschweidnitz) commemorates the victims of Nazi MEDICAL ATROCITIES committed at the former Großschweidnitz State Asylum. More than 5,500 women, men, and children lost their lives here, killed through lethal overdoses of sedatives, deliberate starvation, and systemic neglect. In addition, more than 2,000 people were transferred from Großschweidnitz to Pirna-Sonnenstein Euthanasia Centre, where they were MURDERED.

The permanent exhibition of the memorial is located inside the former pathology building of the Großschweidnitz State Asylum. In the adjacent asylum cemetery, a memorial stone and name plaques honour those buried here after falling victim to Nazi medical atrocities between 1939 and 1945.
