The KUKOKLI festival was founded by two friends, Johanka and Miriam, who are bound by a shared love of music, theatre, and nature.
The project was born in 2016 when we began exploring forgotten spaces, focusing primarily on the untapped potential of churches. That same year, we organized a pilot edition of the festival at the Church of St Clement in Prague.
Then, in 2018, we discovered the run-down Baroque Church of the Visitation of Our Lady in Horní Vítkov near Liberec, a protected Czech cultural monument. It was love at first sight; we knew right then that this enchanting location, surrounded by meadows and forests, was the perfect setting for a festival with an extraordinary atmosphere. Our vision was warmly supported by Mr and Mrs Kačan, the caretakers of the monument, making our dream a reality. And so it was that the inaugural KUKOKLI festival was held at the end of September 2018.
KUKOKLI is not just about music, theatre, and great food, but about the surrounding landscape, which truly enhances the unique genius loci of this historic site. One overriding goal is to cultivate an intimate atmosphere, deliberately setting ourselves apart from overcrowded and impersonal commercial productions.
