A MATTER OF TIME | Who measured time in old Görlitz and how?

About this event

A clock that is seven minutes fast. Dials that show more than just the hour. And a timepiece that ensures the sermon doesn't last too long. In Görlitz, time has been following its own paths for centuries!

On November 7, we invite you to take a walk through the traces of time – hidden on the facades of townhouses, church walls, and towers. We will discover extraordinary sundials, learn their secrets, and check why people didn't all live by the same time in the past.

We will also look at how timekeeping influenced the life of the entire city. When did trade begin, gates close, and work end? What did the famous astronomer and mayor Bartholomäus Scultetus have to do with the city clocks? And what surprises do the dials on the Town Hall Tower hide?

This time, we won't just be looking at monuments. We will see how the whole city functioned in the past!
