"KUMOTRY" – A HISTORY THAT CONNECTS BUKOVINA WITH LUBAŃ!
Join us for a special screening of the documentary film "Kumotry" (Godparents), directed by Emilia Śniegoska, dedicated to the history of Poles in Bukovina and their post-war fate.
The film screening will also be a special opportunity to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the death of Father Ignacy Kukla this year – a figure inseparably linked to the history of the Polish community in Bukovina.
After the end of World War II, and as a result of the Soviet occupation of the northern part of Bukovina, during intensifying Soviet repression, Father Kukla helped Poles escape from Bukovina to Poland. The baptismal certificates and documents confirming Polish origin issued by him were, for many, the only way to escape the Stalinist regime, often saving their lives.
One such original document is now in the collection of the Regional Museum in Lubań. A copy can be seen at our exhibition "We, Poles from Bukovina", which is part of our permanent collection.
Why Lubań specifically?
After the war, some of the Poles leaving Northern Bukovina ended up here. They settled in Lubań, Uniegoszcz, Pisarzowice, and the surrounding towns, co-creating – along with other post-war settlers – the new history of the Lubań region.
The memory of their roots is still alive in our city. The Bukovinian Foundation "Brotherly Help" (Fundacja Bukowińska „Bratnia Pomoc”) operates here, nurturing the heritage and memory of the settlers from Northern Bukovina, as does the "Echo Bukoviny" Choir. One of the streets in Lubań is also named after Father Ignacy Kukla – the Bukovinian.
ABOUT THE FILM "KUMOTRY"
The film tells the extraordinary story of the friendship between women living in the Polish village of Plesza, located in the Romanian part of Bukovina. It is at once a suggestive picture of everyday life and of remnants of a world and culture that are disappearing forever.
The protagonists - Hanka and Bronka - have already buried their husbands, and their children have left abroad in search of better prospects. Independent and self-reliant, the protagonists impress with their cheerfulness, even though their reality is inexorably slipping into the past. Memories remain of times that will not return – and the shared facing of everyday challenges.
The nostalgic image delights with unpretentious humor and cinematography that captures the charm of the Carpathian foothills. The director creates a touching film about memory, friendship, and transience. The portrait of the protagonists, who are everything to each other, encourages a reassessment of priorities and a look at reality from a different perspective.
