The Baltic Sea island of Hiddensee, a beloved, legendary place of yearning for freedom: sun worshippers, nudists, artists, punks, and celebrities have always flocked here in droves. The film travels back to the golden 1920s, when artists like silent film star Asta Nielsen or Gerhart Hauptmann frequented the island. Then as now, the political conditions of the entire country are reflected on the island. In hypnotically beautiful black-and-white images, the award-winning director connects current and historical footage, eyewitness accounts, and present-day conflicts into a poetic and cliché-free cinematic experience full of visual and narrative power.
