Zittwerke was a Nazi front company for the Junkers aircraft plant in Dessau. They manufactured innovative turbojet engines for the Messerschmitt Me 262 – the German Armed Forces' jet fighter. In response to the bombing of central Germany, production was relocated to the Zittau region between 1943 and 1944. For this purpose, numerous factories in the area of today's tri-border region were taken over. The core of the production complex became the barracks in Kleinschönau, now Sieniawka, which were expanded for this purpose. Thousands of prisoners were forced to work there under inhumane conditions. Production began at the end of 1944.
